Generics helped cut state's drug spending
18 December, 2006
Residents of Upstate New York reduced
prescription drug spending by an estimated $130 million
by switching from brand names to generics, according
to a study by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.
The analysis was based on the consumption patterns of
1.3 million people in 39 counties from October 2005
to October of this year. A consumer could save up to
$400 per drug, per year, by using generic
drugs, said Joel Owerbach, vice president and chief
pharmacy officer at Excellus.
